Closing Down Harmony Lane blog

Hi everyone

This is just a short post to advise that I have had to reduce the number of blogs that I have so that I can post to them on a more timely basis.

To that end I am closing my Harmony Lane blog as of now.

The good news is that I will be maintaining only three blogs that will hopefully focus a little more exactly on the topics that appear to be of interest to my web 2.0 readers, twitter followers and FaceBook friends.

"The Hockey Song" A tribute to Earl

Welcome

I just wanted to share a favorite by one of Prince Edward Island's native sons.

"The Hockey Song" by Stompin' Tom Connors was one of my brother in law's (Earl) favorite songs. Earl loved to watch hockey and he was an avid Vancouver Canucks fan. (Earl lived much of his life in Vancouver with his wife Irene and his four children John, Patricia, Frank and Bob)

He loved his family including two daughter in laws Leeanne and Cathy a son in law Gordie three grand daughters Shara, Kayla and Carlie two grand sons Dallas and Brett as well as his grand son in law Selcuk, great grand son Senol and great grand daughter Aliye

Earl's life journey ended on July 21, 2006 after a lengthy battle with MS peacefully with his family by his side.

I really can't imagine hearing this song without thinking of Earl.

"The Hockey Song" is a Canadian anthem, written and sung originally by Stompin' Tom Connors. It is now routinely played at hockey arenas where crowds sing along.

The song first appeared on Connors' 1973 album, Stompin' Tom and the Hockey Song. However, the song did not reach its tremendous popularity until 1992. It was at this time, that the song was played at Hockey games. Fans took a liking to the song, and it spread throughout both Canadian and American hockey arenas. Today, it is a well-known song, celebrating Canada's love for its national game, hockey.

The song is well known for its chorus,

Oh! The good old hockey game,
Is the best game you can name;
And the best game you can name,
Is the good old Hockey game!

The verses of the song are split up, so that each one describes a period of play in a typical hockey game.

Have You watched "An Inconvient Truth" yet?

Good Evening and Welcome back

It is a bit cooler here at Harmony Lane tonight. (about 29F not bad for Jan 14th)

Phil I stocked the fridge with extra Pepsi ( just for you) and Irene I just got a fresh box of Apple Cinamon speciality tea on my walk to Tim Horton's today so I hope you like it. (sure smells great) Bobby, Gordie and Pat you are going to have to let me know what you would like when you come to visit. You can leave a comment at the bottom of this post if you like.

I just finished watching the DVD "An Inconvienent Truth" (about 90 minutes) with Al Gore on the subject of Global Warming or Climate Change whichever you prefer. I would recomend it for viewing as it really makes you stop and think. By the way don't miss the update by Al Gore (about an additional 30 minutes) in the added features section.

If you go to Mr. Gore's website http://www.climatecrisis.net/ there is a link to http://www.erideshare.com./ Our local RideShare PEI Yahoo Group is registered with "erideshare" as a car pool group. Car pooling is one way to reduce the amount of carbon that we are putting into our air every day. As Mr. Gore tells us in his movie every little bit helps.

New FREE Anti-Virus

Hi Everyone

Welcome back to Harmony Lane. I have been asked recently about how to protect your PC from attacks by Viruses.

Well I can only tell you what I use and it seems to be doing the job. I use the FREE version of AVG from GRISOFT.

GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and full compatibility with the latest Windows Vista version is available. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007.

So there you have it. The other two things that are a bother are "SPAM" and "Popups". I have suggestions for FREE solutions to those as well and I will deal with them in the next two blog posts.

An Awsome Software Site!

Hi and welcome back

I gotta tell you! I just finished listening to the latest mp3 netcast of Tech Watch Radio and the guys were featuring the software 995 website.

Now this site has a multiple of software products that sell for $9.95 USD each. These products are awsome just look at the number of customers that they have.

OK there is a better deal since that if you buy the "tool key" for $29.95 USD then you have access to all of the tools. (products)

Pretty awsome eh but I know this blog is all about FREE stuff right?

Well here is the icing on the cake! All, yes all of the tools (products) are downloadable FREE!

Now there is some sdvertising but the tools are fully fuctional and spam free so go take a look.

I know it's been awhile since I have posted here at Harmony Lane but I have been doing all kinds of things like learning more about setting up and running websites, putting some ideas up on other blogs, networking with some website developers and copywriters. (who by the way have health issues as well)

Well I think I now have something like seven blogs here at blogspot and so I thought I would try to post to a different blog every day and that way all the blogs will get a fresh post every week.

So look for a post here at least once every week. (I like weekly as that is the rotation of the tech sites that I keep up with)

It's Worth the time!

If you havn't heard of Rich Schefren than you have just not been on the net lately.

I like his style. His byline on his blog is "More Money, More Business, More Time Off."

Now that sounds like a good thing right? Well when I asked some friends the other night if they had watched his video. They replied we don't have the time to spend watching a 90 minute video.

Well may I suggest that Rich's principals are textbook while drawing on the power of todays technology to achieve the desired results.

Or in other words this is a GOOD THING and WORTH THE TIME!

So I am giving you a link to Richs' Blog so that you will have all of his little gems all in one place.

Free Stuff for Seniors

Hi Gang

Well I have finally resurfaced. I was not lost after all. LOL

Come for a walk with me today. (don't forget to grab a cold drink from the fridge on the way out.
Maybe we can walk down to the marina. (it is a beautiful day here in PEI)

Montague summer days are in full swing this weekend and there are rides and live entertainment at the marina. (enjoy!)

We can find a shady spot and have a rest if you start getting a bit tired.

Hornby Island Eagles Nest

Good afternoon everyone

It is a beautiful day here on Harmony Lane. I just returned from my walk. (went to Tim's for a tea) My neighbour John was out for a walk as well. I met Sheila on the shortcut path and visited with Rosie and Maria for a minute at Tim's. Talked to Urban about creating a simple website for him and gave him a list of things to prepare for me. I saw Jim, Shane and Victor at Tim's as well.

Lorne told me that he had a 3.5" floppy disk go bad and he lost the information that was stored there.
However he had emailed the important file to a friend and was able to recover it that way.

I had a short visit with Red also while at Tim's. He told me that his computer was running a bit slow so I asked him if he ever had done a defrag on his hard drive. "No" was his response so I suggested that he might try that to see if it helps.

I met Kay on the way home. She asked how was I doing.

I love my little walks as I get to meet all of these people and find out how their day is going.

58 degrees F and partly cloudy makes for a very nice afternoon for a walk.

BTW I have a great link for you today. This is a FREE webcam site of an Eagles nest on Hornby Island just off the East shore of Vancouver Island in British Columbia Canada.

There are two eggs in the nest and it appears that they may be hatching any time now so keep your eyes open.

Stroke information

Hello everyone

Welcome back to Harmony Lane. It is a nice mild day here 39 degrees F, overcast but nice.

Maybe today we can go for a coffee to Tim's (Tim Hortons) as is my usual habit about this time of day.

Walking is one of the best exercises that a Stroke Survivor can do to keep the effected leg active.

(yes Phil they serve Pspsi at Tim's) LOL

Speaking of Stroke, today I have a link for you to a web page that I have been working on. It is Stroke Survivors of Prince Edward Island and it is designed to provide support, education and public awareness to everyone including survivors, Care Givers and Health Professionals.

It is a VERY simple two page design but hopefully effective. (some great links)

Geneology anyone?

Welcome back to Harmony Lane.

I am sorry for not being around for the past month. I have not been feeling totaly up to par. (due to an "Episode" two weeks ago)

My get up and go has been a wee bit slow....sorry

Well I have to tell ya. After the holidays my aunt who lives in Ontario (Canada) sent me a binder full of family history that she has been working on for the past few years.

She is not a computer person so the information is all in hard copy. I thought that it would be useful if all of this information could be put into a computer program designed for that purpose so that it can be saved as a computer file.

I asked a friend that does Geneology what would be a good program to use. He recomended a program called "Brother's Keeper" so here is a link

Sorry about not having posted in awhile. I had a couple of things in my life that has kept me busy over the past few weeks..... Well as I have already said "Welcome Back".

I suppose this is the best time of year to talk about ways to save money. With the Holiday spending most people are tapped out and not looking forward to the credit card bills comming in January.

It happens to be UK based and as such not all of the content will be relevant. However comma the concepts on money are universal so you should get lots of ideas on how saving money can work for you.

Wanna try selling on eBay?

What can I fix for you? Tea, coffee, cranberry juice? We have more hot apple pie and some candy cane icecream.

Today I met a man at Tim's that was asking about selling things on the internet. He has a 1949 International Famall H tractor that he would like to sell.

He was wondering where he could go to find a service that would sell it on eBay for him.

So tonite in the chat room on Strokenet interestingly enough the topic of selling stuff on eBay came up again. Jean Riva (caregiver to her husband Don) along with Don used to sell on eBay before Don's stroke and now they would like to get back to doing it again.

Well she says that they are using a service that does the selling for them. It is called "I sold it on eBay". There are a number of these stores all over the United States and they do all of the work. Jean says that all they have to do is sort through the stuff to sell and cash the checks. Cool eh

So what does a service like this cost? Well Jean says that they typically charge 25 percent of the sale. (which considering the work involved would seem to be quite fair)

Well that is not FREE is it!..... Nor is the service available in Canada. (at least to the degree that it is in the states.)

So to that end here is a link to a blog that provides FREE resources for selling on eBay. Check it out and tell me what you think.

A FREE Web Dictionary that rocks!

Welcome back to Harmony Lane. C'mon in and pull up a chair.

There is the comfey couch with the comforter, the big chair for two to curl up in, the lay z boy recliner and the rocker by the fire. It is not that cold out tonite but it has been raining all day so I lit a fire to dry the dampness.

Can I make you a tea or a cup of hot chocolate?....yes....GREAT! By the way Phil the Pepsi is in the fridge.

How was your day? Mine was very busy with working on the computer doing invoices and billings. Didn't finish till after 9.

I have an interesting little FREE utility program for you today called "WordWeb". A small but very powerful dictionary that sits in your system tray.

You can use it from within any program so it gives easy access to a very powerful dictionary without having to go to the book shelves to retrieve the bulky and heavy one that you keep there.

You can use the bookshelve one if you like but this virtual one gives you word power on the fly.

There is a pro version that you can purchase if you prefer. I hope that you find it useful.

Prince Edward Island is heaven to me!

Asha a fellow stroke survivor asked me about "Skype" in my Strokenet Blog. I had to say that I have not yet tried it as I have not found anyone yet that is using it.

However, that said, I have been using the also FREE MSN Messenger. (seems to be popular with the younger crowd) So today I am giving you a link to the MSN Messenger download page where you can download and install Messenger for yourself. (if you don't already have it)

Messenger also has a download version for the MAC so you don't have to be a IBM type to use it.

The audio is very natural and it is more like talking to a person in the same room then talking on the phone. (you can surf the net and talk at the same time) There is also Video so fire up your webcam if you like.

There are a number of games that you can play with the person you are connected with.

You will need to setup a Hotmail address (also FREE) in order to use MSN Messenger.

Good morning, afternoon or evening

Welcome back to Harmony Lane. Would you like a cup of tea?

The weather has the nip of Fall today but no snow yet. Tomorrow is forcast to be havey rain and high winds so I think that sounds like a Great! day to curl up with the cat and catch up on my reading.

I have regular, Green or Pepermint tea so take your pick.

I thought you might be interested in a very cool "open source" FREE software program. It features a very powerful (Word) like word processor as well as a very powerful (Excel) like spreadsheet. Also there is a nice (Power Point) like presentation program.

Flash!...NBC Nightly News now available on the net

Hi again

Sorry to blog twice tonight but.....

Just another quick item that I need to share.

The NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams is now available on the internet.

As of tonight Monday November 7th 2005 the News will be available via internet as of 10pm Eastern each night.

There is a link on the Right Side Bar that will take you right to the site. The player can be opened in full screen mode so you don't have to close one eye to watch the small window. The quality is also quite good so.....ENJOY!

We had a lovely day, warm temps and some nice sunshine this afternoon. I took a nice walk over to the mall this afternoon and stopped by Timmies (Tim Horton's) on the way home for a nice tea and some friendly chit chat.

The Fall colors are beautiful. (Such a beautiful time of year)

Well...I know that you may be interested in the link that I would like to share with you today.

Who needs business cards....everyone! Why? Well because everyone is in marketing and communications right? If we are business operators then there is no question. However, even if we don't have a business we still give out our contact information almost every day. So a nice way to do that is by giving out a professionally printed full color business card.

Black Forest Cake!

One of my all time favourite desserts

BLACK FOREST CAKE

Yield: 10 Servings

6 Eggs
1 c Sugar
1 ts Vanilla
4 oz Unsweetened chocolate;
.. melted and cooled
1 c Sifted flour

MMMMM---------------------------SYRUP-----------------
1/4 c Sugar
1/4 c Water
2 tb Cherry liqueur

MMMMM--------------------BUTTER CREAM FILLING---------
1 1/2 c Powdered sugar
1/2 c Unsalted butter; softened
1 Egg yolk
2 tb Cherry liqueur

MMMMM--------------------------TOPPING----------------
2 c Canned sour cherries; patted
.. dry
2 tb Powdered sugar
1 c Heavy whipping cream;
.. whipped
8 oz Semisweet chocolate; shaved

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Grease and flour 3-8"
cake pans.

2. Beat eggs, sugar and vanilla about 10 minutes
until very thick and fluffy. Fold in chocolate and
flour alternately ending with flour. Bake in
prepared pans 10 to 15 minutes or until cakes test
clean. Cool in pans on wire racks 5 minutes before
removing to racks to cool completely.

3. Boil sugar and water 5 minutes. Cool, then stir
in liqueur. Poke layers; brush with syrup.

4. Beat powdered sugar and butter until well
blended. Beat in egg yolk until very light and
fluffy, about 5 minutes. Fold in cherry liqueur.

5. Spread bottom layer with half of the filling.
Place 3/4 cup of the cherries evenly on top. Put
second layer on and repeat. Put on third layer.

6. Gently fold powdered sugar into whipped cream.
Frost top and sides of cake. Arrange remaining
cherries on top and press chocolate into sides
reserving a few for top of cake. Chill until ready
to serve.

That should help you gain a few pounds eh.
